Foreword
This standard is adopted non-equivalently from ASTM A681-1994 “Alloy Tool Steels” (USA).
Compared with ASTM A681:
Compared with the previous standard:
This standard replaces GB/T 1299–1985 “Technical Conditions for Alloy Tool Steels” from the date of implementation.
Appendix A of this standard is a normative appendix.
Appendix B of this standard is an informative appendix.
This standard was proposed by the State Metallurgical Industry Bureau.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Steel Standardization Technical Committee.
This standard was drafted by Shougang Special Steel Company and the Central Research Institute of Metallurgical Information and Standards.
Main drafters: Han Chunyu, Luan Yan, Zhang Weitang, Zhang Tiegang, Liu Baoshi, Dai Qiang.
This standard was first published in December 1977 and first revised in July 1985.
1 Scope
This standard specifies the classification, dimensions, shape and permissible deviations, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, marking, and quality certificates for alloy tool steels.
This standard applies to hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn, and bright alloy tool steels. Their chemical compositions also apply to ingots, blooms, and their finished products.

5.5.3.2 For flat bars, the acceptable grade of eutectic carbide non-uniformity shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser.
5.6 Decarburization
5.6.1 The total single-side decarburization depth (ferrite + transition zone) of hot-rolled and forged steels shall comply with Table 5. Upon purchaser’s request and by mutual agreement, Group I may apply. For cold-drawn steels, the total single-side decarburization depth, except for silicon-containing alloy steels, shall not exceed 1.5% of the nominal dimension; for silicon-containing alloy steels, it shall not exceed 2% of the nominal dimension. Bright steel surfaces shall not have any decarburization layer. The total decarburization depth for flat bars and steels with diameter (thickness) greater than 150 mm shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser.
Table 5 — Total Decarburization Depth (mm)
| Steel Diameter or Thickness | Total Decarburization Depth (not exceeding) | |
|---|---|---|
| Group I | Group II | |
| >5–150 | 0.25 + 1% D | 0.20 + 2% D |
Note: D = nominal cross-section dimension of the steel.
5.6.2 The decarburization depth for 6W6Mo5Cr4V, 4Cr3Mo3SiV and 3Cr3Mo3W2V steels shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser.
5.6.3 The non-magnetic die steel 7Mn15Cr2Al3V2WMo is not subject to decarburization testing.
5.7 Magnetic Permeability
The non-magnetic die steel 7Mn15Cr2Al3V2WMo shall have a magnetic permeability less than 1.01. When the supplier guarantees compliance, testing may be waived.
5.8 Surface Quality
5.8.1 Hot-rolled and forged steels for pressure working shall not have visually visible cracks, laps, scabs, or inclusions on the surface. If such defects exist, they must be removed. The removal depth from the actual dimension shall comply with Table 6. The removal width shall not be less than 5 times the depth. Other minor surface defects within half the tolerance may remain unremoved.
Table 6 — Allowable Removal Depth (mm)
| Steel Diameter or Thickness | Allowable Removal Depth (same cross-section) |
|---|---|
| <80 | Half tolerance |
| 80–140 | Full tolerance |
| >140 | As agreed between supplier and purchaser |
5.8.2 Hot-rolled and forged steels for machining may have local defects not exceeding the depth specified in Table 7 from the nominal dimension.
Table 7 — Allowable Depth of Local Defects (mm)
| Steel Diameter or Thickness | Allowable Depth of Local Defects |
|---|---|
| <80 | Half tolerance |
| >80 | Full tolerance |
5.8.3 Cold-drawn steel surfaces shall be clean and free of scale and cracks. Slight oxidation color or light oxide layer is permitted. For cold-drawn steels of grades 9 and 10 precision, no surface defects are permitted. For grades 11 and 12 precision, minor surface defects such as pits, individual scratches, hairline cracks, scars, dark spots, tearing, and lubricant traces are permitted, provided the depth does not exceed the tolerance of the nominal dimension from the actual dimension. Upon purchaser’s request, the defect depth may not exceed half the tolerance of the nominal dimension. Bright steel shall comply with GB/T 3207.
5.8.4 Surface quality of flat bars shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser.
5.9 Special Requirements
Upon purchaser’s request and by mutual agreement, the following additional inspection items may be added for alloy tool steels. Their test methods, number of tests, assessment criteria, and acceptable grades shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser and specified in the contract:
6 Test Methods
The test methods for inspection items of steel shall comply with the provisions of Table 8.
