What is a Socket Weld Flange
A Socket Weld Flange is designed for small-bore, high-pressure piping systems. The pipe is inserted into a recessed socket area and fillet welded to the flange hub, creating a strong, leak-proof connection.
Key Features
- Socket bore matches pipe outer diameter for precise fit
- Fillet weld provides strong mechanical connection
- Internal crevice minimized for better flow characteristics
- Available in raised face (RF) or ring type joint (RTJ)
Advantages
- Excellent for high-pressure applications
- Better fatigue strength than slip-on flanges
- No beveling required for welding
- Good flow characteristics with proper gap
- Cost-effective for small diameter piping
Applications
- High-pressure steam lines (NPS 2 and below)
- Hydraulic systems
- Chemical injection lines
- Instrument tubing connections
- High-pressure process piping
Installation Guidelines
Important: Leave a 1.6mm (1/16 inch) gap between pipe end and socket bottom to allow for thermal expansion and reduce weld stress.
Standards and Specifications
- ASME B16.5: NPS 1/2 to 3, Class 150-2500
- ASME B16.11: Forged fittings, socket weld and threaded
- EN 1092-1: European standard socket weld flanges
Material Options
- Stainless Steel: 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 347
- Carbon Steel: ASTM A105, A350 LF2
- Alloy Steel: F11, F22, F91
- Duplex Steel: 2205, 2507

Lap Joint Flange Stub End Assembly Easy Alignment Piping Systems
Understanding Lap Joint Flanges A Lap Joint Flange consists of two components: a stub end and a backing flange. The stub end is butt-welded to the pipe, while the backing flange rotates freely around it, allowing for easy bolt hole alignment during assembly. Design Features Two-piece construction: stub end + backing flange Backing flange rotates […]
Threaded Flange No Welding Quick Connection Piping Solutions
Threaded Flange Overview A Threaded Flange connects to pipes using internal threads, eliminating the need for welding. This makes threaded flanges ideal for applications where welding is impractical or where quick installation and disassembly are required. Design Characteristics Internal threads match pipe external threads (NPT or BSP) No welding required for installation Tapered threads create […]
