Proper Flange Installation: Step-by-Step Guide for Industrial Piping

Correct flange installation prevents leaks, extends equipment life, and ensures safety. Follow this comprehensive guide for professional flange assembly.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Flange rating matches design pressure and temperature
  • Material compatibility with process fluid
  • Gasket type and size are correct
  • Bolts and nuts are proper grade and length
  • Flange faces are clean and undamaged

Step 1: Flange Alignment

Proper alignment is critical. The flanges should be parallel within 1/16 inch per foot of diameter. Use alignment pins to match bolt holes without forcing.

Step 2: Gasket Installation

Select the right gasket: Spiral Wound for general purpose, RTJ for high-pressure oil & gas, Non-Asbestos Sheet for low-medium pressure, PTFE Enveloped for corrosive service.

Step 3: Bolt Torquing Sequence

  1. Insert all bolts hand-tight
  2. First pass: 30% of final torque in star pattern
  3. Second pass: 60% of final torque in star pattern
  4. Final pass: 100% of final torque in star pattern

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-torquing (stretches bolts)
  • Using wrong gasket type
  • Skipping the star pattern sequence
  • Reusing old gaskets
